Maintaining a YouTube Channel

When I started Just Pick One UK it was a thing for me to do to share thoughts, insight and feelings about a variety of subjects and sometimes just not much at all. Something for me to do....for me.

But it has grown a bit since then and now it is a blog and YouTube Channel and I am hoping to expand further once my job has finished and I can focus more of my time to it. I hope to grow the channel, have Facebook and Instagram accounts for it which should in turn help it to grow more and then hopefully I'll be able to have adventures and be monetised.

But this is just the beginning. All YouTube channels begin with the first video and mine was .....ok at best I think. I recorded the unboxing of my new camera on my phone which was actually positioned the wrong way round when it didn't need to be. I was trying to film before the light faded and I realised that I had done a bit to camera using my front camera so I could make sure I was in the frame, but then forgot to switch to the back camera to do the unboxing bit. Such a rookie move. As such I struggled and some of the bits I was trying to film were off a bit. Thankfully not too much.

My new camera the DJI Cosmo Pocket 3 has an excellent camera and because of the built in gimble I just need to tap a button on the screen and it will swivel to where I need it to be rather than having to think about it too hard. The bit that gets me now is making sure I press record!

The early days of YouTube feel very far away. When no-one knew what they were doing and no-one had any fabulous tech or editing skills. Now the creators have amazing cameras, drones, expert looking editing skills, teams of people working on their content. But I am just me. I do very much get imposter syndrome when I watch my videos back because I do feel that I am not good enough for YouTube now. There are such amazing creators out there and I don't feel worthy a lot of the time. But I have learned loads of things since getting started. The importance of using my external microphone to get much better audio, how to position the camera, where I can save time in the record which will save time in the edit. Incidentally, I use Capcut as my editing software. It is free but it is incredibly intuitive, easy to use and has all the features I need for now. There are more if I sign up monthly to the Pro version, but while I am getting going and making no money from it, I'll stick to the free.

I am exploring Shorts, TikTok videos, logo design, how to edit videos together, how to make a story from lots of videos and when to publish. Do I just put them up whenever I am done with them or schedule them? Well at the beginning I was publishing as soon as I had finished the editing process but now I have decided to switch to scheduling. That way I can do a batch of editing and get things ready for weeks in advance which will take the pressure off during busy family time.

Keeping on top of not just the recording, but the editing and publishing is the part that doesn't always occur to the newbie creator. It didn't occur fully to me. I've had to learn on the job so to speak and I feel like I have a fair handle on it now which is very confidence building. Whether I am just blindly putting stuff out there or whether there is an audience for my content, time and the analytics will tell.

Until next time

xx
