There are FOUR Lights! - The Beauty of Fandoms
As is the way these days with streaming services, we can re-watch many of our favourite shows of the past. We call these comfort food tv. Something that is easy, simple, safe and is a welcome back to something your brain has no trouble digesting.
A go to comfort food type show for us is Star Trek - The Next Generation (TNG). As the title of this will suggest to any Trekkies out there we have seen this a few times and this is one of the more famous quotes. I am sure that any Trekkie will understand you if you should these four words at them, and instead of shouting "What are you on about?" They will agree with you (unless they are dressed as a Cardassian at the time) give a smile and maybe a high five.
Fandoms can be such a lovely thing to be a part of. Thousands if not millions of people connected through someone's art form. Appreciating the same things and agreeing to like the same stuff. Just a simple quote four words long is enough to join millions of people together. And there are many of these quotes
- Live Long and Prosper - Star Trek the Original Series (TOS)
- I am your father - Star Wars
- You're a wizard Harry - Harry Potter (there are so many here but I am making a simple point)
- To infinity and beyond! - Pixar/Disney
- I am Iron Man - MCU
- Wibbly Wobbly, Timey Wimey - Doctor Who
- You Shall Not Pass! - Lord of the Rings
- Martini, Shaken not stirred - James Bond
- We were on a break! - Friends (I know thats 5 words but 'a' is barely a word and this quote is a good one so don't hate me)
All of them have the power to move you out of your current state and remember a whole world created by an artist or collection of artists who are incredibly talented and somewhat lucky to be in the right place at the right time. I like that art has this ability.
I don't claim to appreciate art, in fact a visit to the Tate Modern museum in London actually made me more annoyed than appreciative. But I do appreciate TV and Films for their escapism. Moving pictures definitely are for me. I have tried to get into reading, but I just can't do it. I have read some classics and have tried to read the books before seeing the films of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and some of Agatha Christies novels. Poirot is my favourite. I am getting into Audiobooks and have recently got into Jeeves and Wooster by PG Wodehouse and Harry Potter as read by Stephen Fry will always be a favourite for me when I am trying to sleep or get on with housework.
Fandoms do have negative sides, no-one can rip apart Star Wars like Star Wars fans. Fans can war on each other Star Wars vs Star Trek is a whole thing. But I implore you to just like what you like and live and let live. I have no desire at all to consume the Twilight Saga in any format, but I do respect everyone's right to choose. So if you have a favourite movie franchise, vocal artist, author, sports teams then thats fantastic but please allow room for your loved ones to love theirs also.
Until next time xx
